Refurbish, Reuse, Renew

Donation Guidelines

Prior to donating the device, please read our terms & conditions statement and consider the followings:

  • Functionality: The device should be in good working condition, at least can power up. Devices with a cracked screen are NOT accepted.
  • Compatibility: Current modern applications require the device to achieve at some acceptable level of performance, therefore the device should be less than 12 years old starting from the date of purchase. However, there are a few exceptions, please send the brand and model information for verification.
  • Security: If possible, the device should be securely wiped of all personal data, including files, passwords, and other sensitive information, to protect the privacy of the owner. If this can not be done by the owner/donor, we'd securely wipe it as part of the refurbishing process regardless of the storage device is going to be reused or not.
  • Cleanliness: The device should be cleaned and sanitized to prevent the spread of germs, bacteria, or viruses.
  • Accessories: The device should come with necessary accessories such as charging cables and power adapters to ensure its usability and convenience for the recipient. If not, that's OK!
  • Communication: Please communicate clearly and honestly about the condition, history, and expectations of the device, including any defects, damages, or limitations that may affect its functionality.
  • Anonymity: Donations are kept anonymous, unless noted otherwise by the donor. A note can be attached to the device with a name and/or an email and optionally, a thoughtful wish for the donee. The note will be forwarded to the donee.

Refurbishing Process

At a high level, the refurbishing process involves the followings:

  • Replace old and/or broken parts with newer parts on a case-by-case basis. The main goal is to enable the device to perform at an acceptable level for at least some important modern applications.
  • Prior to repurposing the device, securely wipe all personal data on the storage of the device (sometimes called "hard drive"), including files, passwords, and other sensitive information, to protect the privacy of the previous owner. However, if the storage device is not able to function at an acceptable level, it would typically be replaced with a more modern one.
  • If the device can not be refurbished, it will be donated to our affiliated certified recycling company Elemental Inc. where it's properly recycled.
